May has been a historical month for Santa Barbara High School athletics. In Dons track and field, junior and October’s Athlete of The Month Andreas Dybdahl competed in CIF State Track and Field Championship in the 1600 meter in which he would clock in at 4:08.64 winning him the state championship while second place Ryan Thomas clocked in at 4:08.84. Santa Barbara High School has not had a track and field player win a state championship since Sam Cunnigham in 1969, ending the half-century drought. Senior and NYU commit Davis Flanagin was also participating in state championships for long jump in which he finished 11th place, capping off his eventful high school long jumping career.
In the boys volleyball, sophomore Raglan Kear was named All CIF Southern Section Division II for outside hitter. Channel league was well represented in this roster as they solidified 4 out of the 11 spots available, two San Marcos players and one Dos Pueblos player were awarded as well. The race for Channel League Champions was a three way brawl between San Marcos, Santa Barbara, and Dos Pueblos, all the only schools with double digit wins in the league. However, with the help of Kear’s 205 kills over the season, the Dons would take the league title finishing 13-1 with an overall record of 24-9.
