Santa Barbara High School boys varsity water polo lost in a close game against Camarillo High School at home, with a score of 9-7 on Thurs, Sept. 12. With a record of eight wins and four losses so far for the Dons this year, the boys explain why they came up short in this latest match up against Camarillo.
Lorenzo Russell, a junior at Santa Barbara High (#13) says, “I thought it was a good game. We didn’t start off strong in the first quarter but we turned things around by the end, we did give it our all…and unfortunately we still didn’t end up winning but there’s always more games ahead of us.” Russell added, “If we had taken advantage of the opportunities we had earlier off in the game we could’ve been ahead on the scoreboard and (gone) into overtime (to) assure the win”.
Beginning with a slow start for both schools, the first quarter proved to be all Dons as they finished out the quarter with a 1-0 lead. By quarter three, both the Dons and Scorpions were relentless to assure the win with both teams averaging four points scored in the third quarter.
Junior Sam Walker (#7) says, “It was a tough game, we lost by two, but like Lorenzo said we picked up by the end of the game. We just didn’t make it, unfortunately.” When asked what he believed could be better for upcoming games he said, “We have really good team spirit, we just need to work on communication. I think everyone is trying to lock in on their own but we work really well together.”
After the unfortunate loss against Camarillo, the boys are now preparing for their upcoming home game today, Thurs, Sept 26.
