Girls’ Soccer Season Comes to a Close

The Santa Barbara High School girls’ soccer team wrapped up its season with an overall record of 4-11-3 and a Channel League record of 1-10-3, placing eighth in the league standings. While the season didn’t yield as many wins as hoped, the team found victories in its growth, chemistry, and perseverance.

Senior captain Emma Limon reflected on her time in the program, emphasizing how the team’s bond improved throughout the season. “Although we didn’t get as many wins as we hoped this year, we all got along pretty well. It was fun,” Limon shared. As a captain, she gained a new perspective on leadership. “Looking up to the other captains and being a captain has helped me see what it’s like to lead a team because I’ve never done that before. It motivated me to act better and do better as a person.”

One of the biggest goals for the team was to secure a league victory, which they accomplished with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Rio Mesa High School on January 31. Despite facing challenges, the team remained competitive and determined. “We struggled when other teams would score; we would kind of give up a little bit. But, other than that, I think we all had the urge to win and were competing, but just didn’t execute it that well,” Limon admitted.

The team’s captains were essential in keeping spirits high and motivating younger players. “I was always reminding people if [the other team] would score, act like the score is 0-0,” Limon said, encouraging her teammates to stay focused and push forward. She also expressed pride in the team’s commitment. “I think I’m most proud that everyone showed up to everything. I feel like everyone wanted to be there.”

Senior Sophia Guerrero echoed similar sentiments, valuing the camaraderie developed over the season. “[The season] definitely did not go how we wanted it to, but our goal was to win a game and that’s what we did,” Guerrero said, finding satisfaction in their achievement. “It taught me how to be a part of a team and work together through the ups and downs of the game.”

One of Guerrero’s favorite memories was celebrating goals with her teammates. “It was great when anyone scored really; it was just fun cheering all together.” Guerrero also highlighted the team’s close-knit dynamic, which was encouraged by team lunches and dinners. “One of our goals was to really come together and be a team and we did.”

Sophomore Paloma Valenzuela is already looking ahead to next season with optimism. “We definitely fought hard. It was a good season,” she said. One of her proudest moments was tying Dos Pueblos High School 2-2, demonstrating the team’s ability to compete against tough opponents. “Our goal was winning a couple of games and we accomplished that,” she added. Most importantly, she valued the friendships she built on the team, believing they helped improve their performance on the field.

With many returning players, the Dons are eager to build on their experiences and strive for a stronger standing in next year’s Channel League competition. “Thanks to everyone. We had a great senior season. I couldn’t have asked for more. It was really fun,” Guerrero concluded. With a foundation of teamwork and determination, Santa Barbara High School girls’ soccer is poised for growth in the seasons to come.
