On February 4, 2025, the 40th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) commenced with the United States premiere of Jane Austen Wrecked My Life – a French and English language romantic comedy written and directed by Laura Piani. The movie was well-attended by the Santa Barbara community, including prominent figures like Mayor Randy Rowse and City Council members Eric Friedman, Oscar Guitierrez, and Kristen Sneddon on the red carpet.
“There’s a lot of anxiety in the world, and we need more stories about love and romance and comedy.. I think [tonight’s film] will make people laugh,” shared Friedman.
Jane Austen Wrecked My Life follows main character Agathe Robinson portrayed by Camille Rutherford. Agathe is an aspiring female writer who works in a British bookshop called Shakespeare & Co. in Paris. The story takes a turn when Agathe is invited to the Jane Austen Writers’ Residency in England, where she embarks on a journey of self-discovery. Throughout the film, she confronts her insecurities as she finds herself in a torrid love triangle. What stands out about the film is its modern exploration of themes pertaining to Jane Austen, such as love and independence. More specifically, Agathe is drawn to the traditional dating practices portrayed in Austen’s novels.
It’s no wonder this film was chosen for the festival’s opening night, as Piani’s scriptwriting and filmmaking boast a perfect balance between romance and comedy: romantic tension is frequently accompanied by playful banter and jokes. Jane Austen Wrecked My Life is the perfect movie for a cozy night in with a cup of hot tea and a favorite French snack.
The community can look forward to more great filmmaking for the remainder of SBIFF. “For the next twelve days…please breathe in, breathe out. Be nice to one another and enjoy being alive in the community in a film festival in Santa Barbara. I love you. Please enjoy the opening night film,” shared SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling during his opening speech.
