Best known for their 2019 EP Brain Dead/New Mutilator, Indiana-based art rock band Skull Cult is back with their follow up EP Can’t You See What I Mean?
The new EP kicks off with a strong start in its first track “Language.” The simple song introduces us to the band’s droning guitar, playful synth, scratchy vocals, and punchy drums which only increase in speed, quality, and strangeness as the EP continues.
The next track “New New” picks up where “Language” leaves off. The track increases in speed, adding more experimental guitar riffs, strange samples, and carnival-esk synth tracks which break down into chaotic distorted rhythms by the end of the song.
“Rocker” begins with a quick synth solo before bursting into the band’s nihilistic frustration, exhibited with lyrics such as, “What’s the point of pickin’ up? Just to put it down?” and “I can’t stand it, I can’t settle down.” Like “New New,” the song ends by melting down into noisy guitar solos, heavily distorted bass, and eerie samples.
The band takes a final pass at their trademark synth-filled sound with the track “Organization” before switching it up with a surprising but welcome veer from the fast and scratchy tone of the previous tracks. The final track “273” slows down the EP with its loud echoing gothic riffs played over a haunting synth and spoken vocals. The track harks back to the band’s first album, 2017’s “Vol. 1+2.” A loud, fast, angry gothic jumble of guitar riffs.
Call it Synth Rock, Egg Punk, or Art Rock — whatever matchup of sound this band fits into — Can’t You See What I Mean? cements that they play it well. Skull Cult is currently playing shows in and around the Chicago area and has plans to tour Europe in June.
