Artist of the Month: Tom Foreman

“Let’s just go for it and do it,” declared SBHS student Tom Foreman. Though this was in response to a question regarding the SBHS Dance Team, this phrase seems to encapsulate the go-getter attitude Foreman displays throughout all aspects of his life. Between VADA, Dance Team and ASB, Foreman has no trouble staying busy and can often be spotted around campus spreading school spirit. A senior this year, Foreman has been a member of the SBHS Donettes since his sophomore year, when he made a last minute decision to try out for the team. “I signed up for the auditions the night before because I saw a post on Instagram and it was kind of terrifying but I guess it went well!” Prior to highschool, he took a couple dance classes a week, but it wasn’t until his freshman year taking Ms. Goldman’s dance P.E that he fully realized his passion for hip-hop. “At first when I came in freshman year, I didn’t know it was a thing so I really wasn’t aware,” he said of the hip-hop focused Donettes. Fast-forward four years and he is now the team captain and his choreography is performed at games and functions throughout Santa Barbara. “Ultimately, I just wanted to branch out and do something more… I got on the team and I’ve been doing it ever since.”

In addition to this, Foreman is also a member of VADA, (the Visual Arts and Design Academy) a program he has been involved with since freshman year. When asked about his art Foreman said “I’m trying to implement graphic design into more traditional art, because to be honest I don’t really know how to use photoshop.” Expanding on this, he added, “I’m just not very trained in the digital aspect, which is something I would like to know for graphic design. I’m trying to do my best to take what I do know and make it into something more graphic by using different shapes and colors and really play with the contrast of realism and the abstract.”

As far as college is concerned, Foreman hopes to continue his passion for art as a graphic design major. Although he has not made a final decision yet in terms of what school he will attend, one thing Foreman is sure of is that he will continue dancing throughout college. “Wherever I go, I want to join a hip hop crew there, not the school’s dance team but like a club hip hop team, so most of the colleges I’ve applied to have hip hop groups there that I would want to be a part of .” Wherever he ends up, Foreman is sure to be a welcome addition to any dance program he joins. “I wouldn’t want to lose the thing that’s become such a big part of my life in the past four years.” Though Foreman will be missed next year, it’s clear that he has a bright future ahead of him. Make sure to check out the Donettes upcoming performances throughout the rest of Basketball season as Foreman’s choreography will be showcased.
